So you got a new laptop for Christmas and a student version of Pro Tools and you’re ready to make some Grammy award winning mixes and productions? Well I’ve got good news and bad news.

Good News : You’re gonna have a lot of fun trying out all the new fun toys your DAW has for you to begin with

Bad News : It’s gonna take a lot of time, effort, practice, research and experimentation to get to your first decent mix.

Luckily there are many resources out there available to you both free tutorials from YouTube and articles detailing every aspect of mixing and offering first-hand knowledge that you would not be able to hear about anywhere else. One absolutely invaluable imparter of such wisdom is the LA based, grammy award winning, mix extraordinaire Mr Dave Pensado. Pensado was one of the first to open up and freely share his tricks and techniques In the mixing field as most mixing engineers at the time kept their techniques close to their chest as to always have a leg up on the competition.

His long running YouTube series “Pensado’s Place” breaks down individual techniques and producers styles currently running at an incredible 444 episodes so if you’re lazing about on Christmas and boxing day with nothing to do maybe go on a little binge watch of some of the Pensado’s place YouTube series and you might even learn something.

There are also invaluable resources such as sound on sound magazine which has an extremely diverse back catalog from production to mixing to new and vintage outboard gear for you to peruse at your leisure.
